One Metre (IOM) Nylet Racing Yacht “THREE”
Designed by Frank Parsons and Robin Wheeler-Osman.
A proven design over several season's racing, the new IOM Three has many improvements
and tweaks, and optimum keel and mast position have been maximised to
the full. Features a completely new deck layout and redesigned under deck
winch & radio installation. See bottom of page for customer comments.
She
has all weather capability and can maintain position with her rig when
others have had to reduce canvas. When beating she is impressive and she
comes into her own when close hauled maintaining a steady course. Hands-off
sailing shows her stable nature, and she points very closely. The carefully
designed underwater hull shape pays dividends in the way she is quick
to respond and handles all conditions ably. A very ‘slippy’
boat, a fellow yachtsman commented! In skilled hands she can be a dozen
or so points ahead of the rest of the fleet giving a very convincing win
at the end of the days sailing. She will give a very good account when
pitched against the broader skiff type of yacht, and we have had many
good responses from happy yachtsmen who have impressed others with her
sparkling handling and ability to allow the skipper to set a fast course
(the quickest way between two points is a straight line!), with the minimum
of tacking.

Features - finely moulded GRP hull which is trimmed to deck level, carbon
fibre fin & rudder and ready–made keel box (incorporating mast
box). Rig kit includes Nylet racing sails in scrim with 11.1mm aluminium mast & boom
tubing. Available with either ply deck, or white GRP moulded deck (with
after run drop).
Kit specifications vary, please see options under section 8 in the price
list. GRP hulls moulded in white - colours to special order (at extra
cost) are, blue, red, yellow, black or orange. Racing scrim sails have coloured corners to your choice.
Kits come with a fully illustrated stage by stage colour building booklet, which is normally sent via email if you are able to view them in a pdf file (separate rig building instructions are in a hard copy). We also provide a free BB3 “how to” booklet.
Please
note that the redesigned Spirit 3 features new radio layout and a moulded
GRP deck (with lowered after run). The Spirit is still available with
ply deck for those who desire a more conventional yacht.
Length 1000mm; beam max 210mm.
Semi-kits are designated thus to identify them on the UK postage rates page, as they attract a lower rate of post compared to kits having lead ballast and rig.
ABROAD. Semi-kits can be despatched abroad, as indeed can full kits, but the lead ballast can be omitted if you wish (outside Europe) to reduce air frieght charges. Outside the UK please ask for air carriage rates giving your exact requirements (kit part no.) and state, zip code & country.
For individual component parts such as c.f. fins & rudders, and fittings, see sections 2 and 3. Hulls & kits see section 8. Sails and rigs see sections 4 & 7.
The History of the Spirit IOM racing yacht.
The original design goes back some 15 years when Robin sailed a friend's yacht in his local club. It handled very well and was a good fast design and he liked it so much his chum suggested he make him a hull from his mould. This was the start of the Spirit. Robin made some alterations to the underwater shape to introduce his own ideas of how the after run should be constructed, especially as the hull he had wasn't identical port compared to starb'd! This redesign of the after run was the main alteration, the beam was taken down by half an inch and the bow was redesigned. After trials minor adjustments were made to the mast position (the lead ballast was tweaked in flotation tests prior to building). Anyway, this is how I recall it all those years ago. Since then there have again been minor adjustments to mast and fin position together with the brand new GRP deck which has now replaced the ply decking. The carbon-fibre fin and rudder was introduced some while ago, and doubtless this made an immediate difference. The rudder has been redesigned in 2011. In 2010 alterations were made to the layout of the radio gear under the deck. More freeboard has been introduced, about 3/4 inch at the bow feathering as the gunwales run aft. Thats about it really, so the design is hardly new, but then as an American once said "if it ain't broke don't fix it". The 'secret' of the Spirit Three is her underwater shape, this has never been altered. Thats why this design sails so close to the wind, plus a few other little secrets maybe. No secret are our wind catching sails, as a 'rival' sailmaker said wistfully only recently, "really beautiful looking sails".
Customer comments
I live on the coast of NSW in Australia. Some time ago I bought No.2751 (the one featured on your site). I am currently racing the boat here in Australia in several IOM fleets. I recently changed the rudder servo from standard analogue to a micro digital Hitec, 5kg torque. All of a sudden its a new boat. The elliptical rudder works perfectly and the boat is at full potential now.... please recommend a digital servo for the best result. I use also a Dubro inner and outer nylon cable with ball joints which I think are necessary for such a finely balanced design in strong winds. Points higher than the TS2 and the Topiko. Neither are faster off the wind.... Thanks for a great boat, I have never felt another IOM that glides to windward like the Three. All your efforts are appreciated here. Garry, Australia.
. . just received the Spirit(3) hull etc and I’m over the moon, the quality is quite exceptional. Kent
Peter from Devon wrote: I completed the boat last week and put it into
the water yesterday morning, and was delighted with its performance.
Roy from Norfolk phoned: Just perfect, faultless handling, great to windward,
she’s a very fast boat, I’m beating everything else - I’m
very pleased (2b).
She sails an absolute treat and I'm very happy to have chosen your quick efficient and helpful services. Steve from Aylesbury.
My Spirit 3 is now on the water and sailing well, it sails really close to the wind and is competitive with the best in our club. Colin from Andover (June 2011).
Albert from North Wales phoned: I have just received the kit and the hull moulding is fabulous, everything is great, I've never seen such good quality. (August 2011).
